Referring to the devastating impact of drugs on society, author, humanitarian and Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard wrote, “The planet has hit a barrier which prevents any widespread social progress—drugs and other biochemical substances. These can put people into a condition which not only prohibits and destroys physical health but which can prevent any stable advancement in mental or spiritual well-being.” This statement leads to his further assessment of the role substance abuse plays in the disintegration of the social fabric: “Research has demonstrated that the single most destructive element present in our current culture is drugs.”

Further, Mr. Hubbard’s research in this field brought unparalleled drug rehabilitation solutions to the world. This, in turn, galvanized the Church and Scientologists to initiate the Truth About Drugs, a secular program through which they have worked for more than two decades to empower the millions with the truth about drugs.

The Church and its members are dedicated to eradicating drug abuse through education and invite the participation of all who share the goal of a drug-free world.

Drugs are more than just another social problem. Some 210 million people—at all levels of society—consume illegal drugs. Almost 200,000 die from drugs each year.

The greatest toll is on the young. Every 12 seconds another school-age child experiments with illicit drugs for the first time. Drug use in this age group has risen steadily throughout the past decade and children are exposed to drugs at younger and younger ages.

Drawing on 25 years of experience in drug prevention, the Truth About Drugs program has solved the problem of effectively communicating to teens and young adults the reality of drug abuse, individually and through mass communication.

Both experience and surveys show that teens and young adults are most likely to listen to their peers. Thus the core message is provided by young people—some of whom have gone down the path of addiction and survived to tell the story—who speak to other young people in booklets, public service announcements and a documentary film.

The effectiveness of The Truth About Drugs booklets led to a series of public service announcements, “They Said, They Lied.” with strong depictions of the destructive effects of the most prevalent drugs, the 16 PSAs are contemporary, high-impact communications aimed directly at youth.

These messages can effectively deter first-time drug use and form a vital component of the Truth About Drugs program.

At the center of the Truth About Drugs educational program is a 100-minute documentary The Truth About Drugs: Real People, Real Stories, focusing on each of the 11 most commonly abused substances.

The film presents the facts: what makes a drug a drug, what each does to the mind and body and where they all lead.

To increase the program’s availability still further, a comprehensive, interactive drug education resource center——provides the full range of information and materials, all available for viewing, downloading or ordering online.

Organized volunteer actions across some 180 countries have resulted in the distribution of 50 million drug prevention booklets and tens of thousands of community drug awareness activities.

The impact in preventing drug use is significant. Those who are informed can resist peer pressure and choose for themselves to never start drugs in the first place.

The Church of Scientology International Dissemination and Distribution Center in Los Angeles, California, stands at the heart of the global humanitarian initiatives supported by Churches of Scientology and Scientologists. In addition to generating dissemination materials for the more than 10,000 Scientology Churches, Missions and affiliated groups worldwide, the center produces educational materials for all Church-sponsored humanitarian programs.

The most effective weapon in combating drugs and drug abuse is education. Churches of Scientology and their members have worked in concert with like-minded groups and individuals to bring about a significant change in the global drug problem.

Because of the effectiveness of the educational materials and the impact of the program’s activities wherever it is implemented, the Truth About Drugs campaign commands the respect and support of teachers, health instructors, school counselors, police officers, community leaders, government officials, students and parents.

The global devastation and human misery wrought by drug abuse, illiteracy and moral decay—to say nothing of natural and man-made disasters—is unmistakable. They threaten to rip the social fabric to shreds and in many parts of the world these societal ills have already caused irreparable damage.

What is conspicuously lacking in combating these virtually apocalyptic scenarios are effective solutions. To that end, in the course of his decades of research into the mind and spirit, L. Ron Hubbard developed methods by which to address the crises that threaten our world.

While to bring those solutions to bear, the Church sponsorship of permanent centers to act as “generation plants,” which thereby set in motion broad-scale movements in the name ofmoralityliteracydrug prevention and rehabilitation.

Further, and to realize Scientology’s greater humanitarian objective, the Church has made readily available, easily assimilated and rapidly distributable multimedia tools to raise awareness, educate and activate millions.

The result: the Church of Scientology’s revolutionary social betterment and humanitarian programs. They are utterly unique, indisputably cutting edge and most importantly—effective.

what is scientology

Scientology is a religion in its highest meaning, as it helps bring Man to total freedom and truth. The essential tenets of Scientology are these:

You are an immortal spiritual being.

Your experience extends well beyond a single lifetime. And your capabilities are unlimited, even if not presently realized.

Furthermore, Man is basically good. He is seeking to survive. And his survival depends upon himself and his fellows and his attainment of brotherhood with the universe.

Dianetics comes from the Greek dia meaning “through” and nous, “mind or soul.” Dianetics is further defined as “what the soul is doing to the body.”

Dianetics uncovers the source of unreasonable fears, upsets and insecurities, unexplainable pains, sensations and emotions (psychosomatic illnesses) and sets forth effective handlings for these conditions.

By use of the procedures of Dianetics it became apparent that the source of these conditions were not cells or cellular memory, but a beingness that defied time. The discovery of past lives was followed by the phenomena of exteriorizationthe detachment of one’s spirit from the body while yet fully conscious and aware. With this discovery—and the inescapable conclusion that one is a spiritual being—the Scientology religion was born.

Scientology is defined as “the study and handling of the spirit in relationship to itself, to universes and to other life.” Through the practice of Scientology one can increase his spiritual awareness and ability and realize his own immortality.

Dianetics, though it might not have guessed it in its early publication, was dealing with the human spirit. Dianetics is a forerunner and substudy of Scientology.

The mind is basically a communication and control system between the thetan—the spiritual being that is the person himself—and his environment. It is composed of mental image pictures which are recordings of past experiences.

The individual uses his mind to pose and solve problems related to survival and to direct his efforts according to these solutions.

The mind is made up of two parts—the analytical mind and the reactive mind.

The analytical mind is the rational, conscious, aware mind which thinks, observes data, remembers it and resolves problems.

The reactive mind is the portion of a person’s mind which works on a totally stimulus-response basis. It is not under volitional control, and exerts force and the power of command over awareness, purposes, thoughts, body and actions.

Why We Help

The last decade has been one of the most turbulent in our history. Opposing ideologies, violent revolutions and a frail social economic structure have subjected more than one-third of the world’s population to oppression, poverty and brutal human rights violations. Terrorism and a global economic crisis rips at the very fabric of society, propagating a mindset governed by hysteria, fear and anxiety.

However, emotional stress doesn’t halt at the borders of war-ravaged nations. Right at home the epidemics multiply—from drug abuse, delinquency and broken homes, toilliteracy, unemployment and the stress attendant to these problems. Under these conditions, civic administrators and human services personnel bear a tremendous burden.

But there are answers—real ones that work—delivered by Volunteer Ministers whenever and wherever needed with remarkable results. These answers come from the greater body of Scientology technology and are intended for people of all beliefs.

Over 200,000 strong and spanning every continent of Earth, Volunteer Ministers work directly with community leaders, officials, support personnel and citizens to bring order and real help no matter the situation.

The Volunteer Ministers also reach out with traveling Cavalcades, bringing their help into major cities and communities throughout the world. Visiting a new city each month, these Cavalcades contact thousands at a time.

Inside the familiar yellow tents, anyone can get one-on-one assistance to address whatever troubles they might be facing.

While beyond their daily work in addressing societal ills, the Volunteer Ministers are among the first to arrive when disaster strikes. Trained to respond to emergency situations, they provide whatever is needed to immediately alleviate suffering and bring order quickly. And because the technology they apply is simple and effective, they quickly train others so they too can provide help.

With their organizational skills and ability to bring order, as well as their effective help to victims and emergency personnel, thousands have joined their ranks and Volunteer Ministers have emerged as one of the largest independent relief forces on Earth.

They have also become a global force delivering effective solutions in disaster zones that don’t make the headlines: in homes and schoolrooms, businesses and neighborhoods. They are on call on a 24/7 international Volunteer Minister Hotline.

Anyone, of any belief, who wants to do something to improve conditions around them may become a Volunteer Minister by learning the simple techniques offered by the free courses on this site. Equipped with these solutions, a Volunteer Minister can help build a better world by restoring order, kindness and decency wherever needed.

Message from First Responder on Typhoon Haiyan in Philippines

12 November 2013

Ayal Lindeman is leading the Volunteer Ministers disaster response team in the Philippines. Shown here in Japan after the tsunami of 2011.Super typhoon Haiyan is the worst storm on record ever to have hit the central Philippines, leaving an estimated 10,000 dead, 500,000 evacuated and 10 million affected.

US Veteran first responder Ayal Lindeman is leading the international Scientology Volunteer Ministers disaster response team to help the Philippines recover from super typhoon Haiyan. Here is his message:

“This will be my second trip to the Philippines for a super typhoon Cat 5 response in less than a year.

The devastation is intense. We cannot sit by. No one can. It is the true nature of a being to desire to help and the fact is that you can.

With these deployments, specialized equipment is needed and that takes funds.

We bring help, we assist to bring order from confusion, we find out what is needed and, within the command structure that exists, we do exactly that.  We bring professional responders as well as volunteers for support and we bring comfort and counseling.

We know that our motto as Volunteer Ministers is true: ‘Something Can Be Done About It.’ And we take actions to DO something about it.

Your help is needed. Your support is needed. And more than I could ever express, your support is appreciated.

With Gratitude,”

Applied Scholastics International is a secular nonprofit public benefit corporation that addresses head-on the problem of illiteracy by making broadly available L. Ron Hubbard’s discoveries in the field of education and literacy.

Mr. Hubbard recognized the deep effects on society of lowered education standards and literacy levels, observing that the illiterate or functionally illiterate, denied work and opportunity, often fall prey to criminality, vice or drugs. Thus, he embarked on an examination of the subject of study and isolated the precise causes for the success or failure of any activity or study.

So fundamental were his discoveries to the field of education, he released them for broad use.

Applied Scholastics has been dedicated for more than four decades to making these solutions to learning and literacy available internationally.

Applied Scholastics is a fully independent, nondenominational organization supported by the Church of Scientology and by Scientologists dedicated to raising educational standards throughout the world. Applied Scholastics recognizes that the world will one day rest in the hands of today’s children, and that how well they are equipped to carry this society forward depends on how well they are educated.

Ensuring quality education for today’s students to ensure a brighter future for all is the mission of Applied Scholastics.

Nearly half of all American adults—60 million people—are functionally illiterate. Eight million students have been labeled as “learning disabled,” with prescription drugs too often the “remedy” rather than the three “Rs.”

The United States Department of Education reports that every year, one in three high school students—more than 1.2 million—drop out.

As early as the 1950s, L. Ron Hubbard recognized the failings of the educational system. In answer to this crisis, he began developing an actual “technology” of learning with which to master any subject. These educational breakthroughs are collectively known as Study Technology. They provide students at every age and educational level with the missing ingredient of much of modern education—the ability to learn how to learn.

Applied Scholastics International works with hundreds of affiliated schools and educational programs throughout the world, providing the effective learning tools developed by L. Ron Hubbard.

The Delphi Program is a private school model with its flagship Delphian School in Sheridan, Oregon, and a network of six other schools in major urban centers around the United States.

In addition to a host of community-based tutoring groups that span the globe, Applied Scholastics Study Technology centers and tutors in the United States provide after-school tutoring in 12 states under the Supplemental Education Services (SES) Program. In just one year, Applied Scholastics SES tutors delivered over 8,500 tutoring hours in 50 schools across 36 school districts, and the program has steadily expanded since its launch.

World Literacy Crusade (WLC) is a grass-roots literacy movement founded by an inner-city minister in response to the civil disturbances that shook Los Angeles in 1992.

Recognizing the relationship between illiteracy, drugs and crime, the minister challenged local leaders, parents, youth and educators to change conditions in their neighborhoods.

The Applied Scholastics network of educators, tutoring centers and schools reach out to improve literacy and education not only in their own areas but beyond. From seminars and workshops to comprehensive permanent programs, teams of educators take Study Technology to underserved populations.

The need to study does not end with formal education. Anyone in the work force, whether on the factory floor or in the executive suite, must have the ability to assimilate, retain and then apply important information. Success in life depends on it.

Applied Scholastics is making it possible for anyone to acquire this skill.

Disaster Response

Volunteer Ministers are a global force of people from all cultures and walks of life who are committed, courageous and trained to help others. In the worst of times and places—whether natural disasters or everyday crises—Volunteer Ministers are there with their skills, providing relief and succor to those in need.

Who are the Scientology Volunteer Ministers?

The Volunteer Minister (VM) program was launched more than thirty years ago, in response to an appeal by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard.

Noting a tremendous downturn in the level of ethics and morality in society, and a consequent increase in drugs and crime, Mr. Hubbard wrote, “If one does not like the crime, cruelty, injustice and violence of this society, he can do something about it. He can become a VOLUNTEER MINISTER and help civilize it, bring it conscience and kindness and love and freedom from travail by instilling into it trust, decency, honesty and tolerance.”

Accordingly, in addition to traveling to wherever disaster strikes, Volunteer Ministers work with public servants in their own communities, helping to improve conditions right at home. Their information and training centers are bright yellow tents open to the public at weekend events and fairs, where anyone may enroll on a course or seminar that is delivered right in the tent.

Extensive information displays present the full array of tools for resolving any situation—from rescuing failing students or getting addicts off drugs, to alleviating emotional trauma of physical injuries, salvagingtroubled relationships or solving human conflicts.

Volunteer Ministers also deliver seminars to police, firemen and disaster relief organizations with local community programs as well as through Goodwill Tours traveling from city to city with their tents.

So whether manning a tent at home or in a village 10,000 miles away, Scientology Volunteer Ministers all live by the same motto: “Something Can Be Done About It.”

Because of their courage, compassion and training, they have become indispensable in times of greatest human need—traveling halfway around the world to help people who have lost everything in an earthquake, tsunami, hurricane, flood or the like.

This includes a corps hundreds strong at Ground Zero within hours of the 9/11 tragedy. It also includes more than 500 volunteers from 11 nations in Southeast Asia in the wake of the tsunami and over 900 Volunteer Ministers attending to victims in Louisiana and Mississippi in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Likewise, during the Haiti earthquake disaster, the Church of Scientology and its parishioners flew in planeloads of much-needed medical and food supplies. In addition, they have brought in hundreds of medical professionals and Volunteer Ministers to help Haitians cope with their losses and rebuild their lives.

Volunteer Ministers have also trained and partnered with over 1,000 different groups, organizations and agencies around the world, including the Red CrossFEMA, National Guard, Army Cadets, Salvation Army, Boy Scouts, Rotary Clubs, civil defense and disaster management agencies, YMCAs, police and fire departments of dozens of cities and towns and hundreds more national and regional groups and organizations.

How Did Dianetics Start?

Dianetics technology was developed by renowned American author and philosopher L. Ron Hubbard. L. Ron Hubbard began his study of the mind in 1923. Through his extensive travels, study of many cultures around the world and scientific research, he developed and tested man’s first fully workable technology of the mind. In 1950, Mr. Hubbard wrote Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health, a comprehensive work detailing his discoveries and techniques and the first and only definitive manual of the mind. Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health became a nationwide bestseller almost overnight. By late summer, 1950, people across the country were not only reading the book, but were also organizing groups for the purpose of applying Dianetics techniques. The book has remained a bestseller ever since, becoming number one on The New York Times bestseller list almost four decades after its initial publication. It continues to appear on bestseller lists around the world.

Is Dianetics all Based on One Man’s Work?

Although Dianetics technology was discovered by L. Ron Hubbard, he wrote: “Acknowledgment is made to fifty thousand years of thinking men without whose speculations and observations the creation and construction of Dianetics would not have been possible. Credit in particular is due to: “Anaxagoras, Aristotle, Socrates, Plato, Euclid, Lucretius, Roger Bacon, Francis Bacon, Isaac Newton, van Leeuwenhoek, Voltaire, Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, René Descartes, James Clerk Maxwell, Charcot, Herbert Spencer, William James, Sigmund Freud, Cmdr. Thompson (MC) USN, William A. White, Will Durant, Count Alfred Korzybski, and my instructors in atomic and molecular phenomena, mathematics and the humanities at George Washington University and at Princeton.”

What is the Reactive Mind?

The reactive mind is the portion of a person’s mind which works on a totally stimulus-response basis, which is not under his volitional (willing) control, and which exerts force and the power of command over his awareness, purposes, thoughts, body and actions.

Can Dianetics Technology Help Me Overcome Feelings of Grief and Loss?

Yes. The source of any negative emotion, attitude or feeling is fully revealed in Dianetics. The causes of a person’s feelings of grief or loss are buried in the person’s reactive mind, able to influence and control the person. Dianetics technology guides a person through his or her reactive mind to locate – and permanently eradicate – the actual source of the upset. With the cause of the upset handled, the person is once more able to live a happy, healthy life.

The word church comes from the Greek word kyrios meaning “lord” and the Indo-European base kewe, “to be strong.” Current meanings of the word include “a congregation,” “ecclesiastical power as distinguished from the secular” and “the clerical profession; clergy.”

The word church is not only used by Christian organizations. There were churches ten thousand years before there were Christians, and Christianity itself was a revolt against the established church. In modern usage, people speak of the Buddhist or Muslim church, referring in general to the whole body of believers in a particular religious teaching.

A church is a community of believers who hold in common a system of sanctified beliefs and religious practices by which they strive to overcome the ultimate problems of life.

In the 1950s, Scientologists recognized that L. Ron Hubbard’s technology and its results dealt directly with the freeing of the human spirit, and that greater spiritual awareness was routinely being achieved. There was no question in their minds that they were engaged in a religious practice. Thus, in the early 1950s, they resolved that a church be formed to better serve their spiritual needs. The first Church of Scientology was then incorporated in 1954.

Thus, Scientology is a religion and the use of the word church when referring to Scientology is correct.
